Home Care Day 2020 Recap

On Wednesday, January 29, HCAF hosted our annual Home Care Day advocacy event at the Florida Capitol in Tallahassee, which was attended by more than a dozen industry advocates. All told, nearly 60 meetings were held with lawmakers, legislative staff, and health care policy staffers in Governor Ron DeSantis's office. Click here to view event photos on our Facebook page.

HCAF's top priority during this year's 60-day legislative session is legislation to expand the duties that a certified nursing assistant and home health aide may provide to patients if authorized by and under the direction of a registered nurse. If passed by the legislature and signed into law by the Governor, Senate Bill 1676 (SB 1676, introduced by Senator Ben Albritton [R-Bartow]) and House Bill 7053 (HB 7053, introduced by Representative Josie Tomkow [R-Auburndale]) would achieve HCAF's policy goal to permit these health care professionals to provide medication administration, routine preventative skin care, and basic wound care. The current and very limited scope of duties falls short of the capabilities of these trained and highly qualified health care providers. Simultaneously, passage of SB 1676/HB 7053 takes a "big picture" approach to helping address the health care workforce shortage, protecting access to care for patients, and empowering workers. A full summary of the bill can be found here.

"I am very glad I decided to go," said one advocate in attendance. "Such a worthy cause and my first time out there advocating for something I believe in, something that will help those who matter most…the patients who need it!"

We are thrilled to report that since Home Care Day, SB 1676 has unanimously passed the Senate Health Policy Committee. SB 1676 and HB 7053 each have two remaining committee hearings in their respective chambers before the full Senate and House can debate on and decide whether to advance the legislation to the Governor for final approval.

Stay tuned for more updates as these bills make their way through the legislative process. In the meantime, please lend your voice to HCAF advocacy efforts by urging your Senator and Representative to support SB 1676/HB 7063.

HCAF extends its sincere gratitude to the advocates who participated at this year's state lobby day. Their demonstrated leadership and commitment to our industry has already made a tremendous difference!
