Primary Pediatric Palliative Care – Teaching and Learning from Bedside to the Community
Webinar – Tuesday, August 29, 2017
11:30 am to 1:00 p.m. Eastern – Webinar Recording Available
The development of pediatric palliative care programs has expanded significantly in the past decade. In the most recent CAPC report of 2015, 38 pediatric hospital-based programs were identified, with more developing each year. There are even fewer specialty pediatric hospice programs, however, most hospice programs in the United States will care for some pediatric patients. Many bedside clinicians express fear and lack of confidence in caring for pediatric patients with serious illness, particularly those who may be nearing end of life. Palliative care referrals are often delayed due to lack of availability of pediatric palliative care specialists.
Primary palliative care education and mentoring increases the ability of bedside clinicians in all roles, including registered nurses, advanced practice nurses, physicians, social workers, child life specialists, chaplains, and others, to advocate for earlier referrals, provide better access to palliative care for children and families, and decrease moral distress in caring for children, adolescents and young adults with serious illness and their families. This webinar will discuss a novel model of primary pediatric palliative care education and mentoring for hospital-based and hospice clinicians.
At the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
• To define palliative care in the care of the pre-born, infants, children, adolescents and young adults,
• To discuss differences and similarities between adult and pediatric palliative care,
• To define primary palliative care across settings from the hospital to the community,
• To identify and discuss educational and mentoring needs of clinicians across settings in caring for pediatric patients.
